Statement of Intent

“The important thing is to never stop questioning”

Albert Einstein

At Millfield, we recognise and value the importance of Science in our everyday lives and the understanding it gives children about the wider world around them. We offer our children an exciting and engaging curriculum which develops a breadth of knowledge as well as the skills they need to ask questions, and then seek out answers.   By developing their skills to work scientifically, we equip our children to investigate, observe, record and evaluate; skills which will equip them for the future and provide opportunities as lifelong learners and citizens in their community.

At Millfield, we base our Science curriculum on the National Curriculum, which builds Knowledge and skills progressively over time. Children revisit key concepts at different key stages in order to develop and consolidate their knowledge. By the end of Key Stage 2, our children have developed a broad knowledge of scientific concepts and scientific skills on which to build as they continue their educational journey.

Hand in hand with the acquisition of Knowledge, children learn the skills of Working Scientifically. Providing frequent opportunities to learn through practical, hands-on and lively scientific experiences enables children to actively learn through seeing and doing. Children apply their skills from other areas of the curriculum in their Science work. Investigations and practical activities evoke curiosity and encourage children to think and ask questions, notice and wonder why!

In addition, through enrichment activities, school trips, visitors to school and extra-curricular activities, we provide scientific experiences enabling all our children to further promote their curiosity and love of learning.

Through providing a thorough and rich Science curriculum, we enable Millfield children to enjoy Science, as well as understanding the importance of Science in our lives and the choices it offers them in their own future careers and endeavours.
