Beech Class 2024-25

Spring Term Learning

Thank you for stopping by the class page for Beech Class. My name is Mr. Hurrell, and I am your child’s teacher for this academic year. Mrs. Halls is the class teaching assistant, and we welcome you and your child to Beech Class together.

In the morning, we will have phonics.

In English this half term, we will be writing about the books Beegu by Alexis Deacon and The Tadpole's Promise by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross.

In maths, we will explore length and height with Mrs. Herd on Wednesday and place values within 20 with Mr. Hurrell for the rest of the week. Copy and paste the links below into your browser to access songs that will help your child learn about these mathematical concepts.

In the afternoon we will explore our curriculum theme for this term. Our theme for the Spring Term is ‘Heroes and Heroines.’

As Geographers, we continue to travel around the world,

exploring hot and cold continents and the vast oceans, linking this to the creatures that live there. Groundwork will us to deliver our mapping skills, showing where our local wildlife lives.

As Historians, we will learn more about the lives of people like Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale, and Edith Cavell. We will discover more about how they helped people and any difficulties they overcame.

As scientists, we will identify and compare everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper, and cardboard, for particular uses. We will find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting, and stretching.

As Artists, we will explore the work of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, two artists famous for pop art. We will create pieces of art inspired by their work.

As Designers, we will learn simple sewing techniques to make a butterfly.

Important information:

Reading books will be changed every Friday. Please ensure all reading books and reading records are in your child’s book bag by Thursday so they can be changed on Friday. You will need to record for each book that your child has read before it is changed.

The expectation for Key Stage 1 is that your child reads four times a week at home.

Homework is in Home Learning books. It covers spelling and a maths task. Homework is given out on Monday and collected on Friday. Please make sure your child brings their home learning book to school on Friday.
