Music Intent Statement

Music Subject Champion - Ruth Barrett

“Music can change the world.” — Ludwig van Beethoven

At Millfield Primary School we make music enjoyable for all children; supporting them on their journey to developing a love of music, while giving them the confidence and self-belief to become musicians. Within our music teaching, we instill a greater understanding of different cultures and the diverse world around us.

Music at Millfield encourages children to discuss how music makes them feel; helping them to articulate their emotions. Our teaching focuses on singing, listening, composing and performing using voice, un-tuned and tuned instruments.

Through singing, children learn over time to develop pitch and harmony. Through listening to music, children expand their musical horizons, while deepening their understanding of how music is constructed and the impact this can have on the listener. When learning to compose, children develop the ability to create melodies and bring these together into short pieces. During performance to an audience, children are given opportunities to; celebrate, share and experience music, and to constructively and respectfully express their thoughts with each other.
